The CSWM service is responsible for two regional waste management centres that serve the Comox Valley and Campbell River, as well as a range of transfer stations and smaller waste-handling and recycling facilities for the electoral areas of the CVRD and the Strathcona Regional District. The CSWM service manages over 100,000 tonnes of waste and recycled material and oversees a number of diversion and education programs.
The CSWM service and programs are supported by the regional solid waste management plan (RSWMP) which is a plan mandated by the Provincial Environment Management Act. The SWMP is a guide to how the region will manage its garbage now and into the future. The SWMP for the CSWM service was updated in 2012 and received approval from the Ministry of Environment (MoE) on May 23, 2013.
The CSWM oversees a multi-material recycling program and has active re-use and re-purposing programs in place at each of our landfills. At present, just over 51 per cent of solid waste generated in the district is diverted through these programs.
