COVID-19 Coronavirus Update

COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Update

Under the current circumstances we are asking that residents do their best to reduce demands on waste and recycling facilities. If you have access to a municipal curbside collection and recycling program please refrain from using landfills at this time. Rural residents without curbside pickup should limit their visits to yard and essential waste only.

The Comox Valley Waste Management Centre, and other Comox Strathcona Waste Management service facilities are open at this time to provide essential waste disposal services to their communities. In an effort to reduce the risk to staff, and limit the risk of a reduction to the level of service we can provide, we need to ask for the cooperation of the public.

Before you head to your local garbage and recycling facility, please consider if your trip is essential or if you could hold off. Now is not the time to bring in that microwave you’ve been hanging onto for a year, or loading up your trailer with a big spring clean-up load. Rural residents dropping off household garbage, our municipal curbside collection partners, and commercial collectors are our priority right now. We thank you for your cooperation.

Changes in Service Levels for Pick-Up Services, Garbage, Recycling or Yard Waste

Important Changes to Municipal Curbside Collection

To protect waste collection workers, all waste for roadside pickup must be bagged and securely tied - no loose items should be placed in curbside garbage containers. Your garbage will not be collected if there are loose unbagged items. Please properly bag items and place your garbage back out on your next garbage collection day, you will not need an additional tag. Please contact the waste collection company Emterra at 250-336-8066 if you have questions about these service changes.

Check with your municipality or your private provider to determine if there have been any changes to your garbage or recycling pick-up schedule.

If you or a member or your household has, or has had COVID-19, how should you dispose of our garbage like dirty tissues?

In an effort to protect workers collecting your waste, if you or a member of your household has contracted COVID-19 we ask that you hold off on putting your garbage, recyclables and yard waste at the curb until after your quarantine period has ended.

Materials like dirty tissues must be placed into a plastic bag within your garbage can for disposal. No loose items.
