Both the Comox Valley Waste Management Centre (CVWMC) and Campbell River Waste Management Centre (CRWMC) will be closing on all provincial statutory holidays, beginning in 2021.
The Comox Strathcona Waste Management (CSWM) Board made the decision for these facilities to close during provincially recognized holidays back in November 2019. While the changes were initially meant to take effect in July 2020, the date was delayed until January 1, 2021 to allow more time for impacted municipalities and commercial waste haulers to make schedule adjustments to accommodate the new holiday schedule.
These holiday closures will result in savings of approximately $60,000 a year for the solid waste service. Not only will the change reduce costs, but it will also align with other closures across the community while continuing to provide a very high level of service for residents. In addition, the closures allow for staff to enjoy time off with friends and family during these important days. Currently there are only two days the facilities close each year, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
The landfill will remain open 355 days a year. Even with the new holiday closures, the CSWM regional landfills provide the most open hours of operation of all landfills on Vancouver Island. In conjunction with the decision to close on stat holidays, the hours of operation were changed at the CVWMC to increase total hours of operation by about 86 hours, the equivalent of approximately 10 days of time.
