Drywall (Gypsum) Diversion

For disposal of non-asbestos drywall at the Comox Valley Waste Management Centre and Campbell River Waste Management Centre. 

Application process for different types of drywall: 

  • New construction drywall (cut offs) with no joint compound/mud: 
    • No testing or analytical report required: Material can be dropped off anytime during regular operating hours and will be subject to visual inspection at the receiving facility. Please complete the Drywall Waste Disposal Application and Declaration Form in advance or when you arrive at the facility. 
  • Demolition drywall dated post-1990 with visible date stamp:
    • No testing or analytical report required: Material can be dropped off anytime during regular operating hours and will be subject to visual inspection at the receiving facility. Please complete the Drywall Waste Disposal Application and Declaration Form in advance or when you arrive at the facility. 
  • Demolition drywall dated pre-1990 or drywall with no visible date stamp:
    • Testing Required: Drywall and joint compound/mud must be tested for asbestos by a qualified professional. A list of local asbestos analysis labs can be found on our website.
    • Testing Requirements: Qualified professionals must collect samples from the home for testing. 
    • Test results with samples brought to labs by homeowners will not be accepted. 
    • Test results are required for each room being renovated. 
    • Paint colours noted on test results must match drywall in load. 
    • Staff may refuse loads with insufficient analytical reports.

How to Check the Year of Your Drywall: Manufacturer’s Date Stamps

Manufacturer’s Date Stamps are printed in black, blue or purple ink. Acceptable date stamps are never printed in green ink. The date stamp can be on the front, back or edge of the broad. 


How Long Does it Take to Process the Form Once Submitted? 

Pre-screening of your application by CSWM office staff may take up to two business days after all required documentation is submitted. If staff have questions or there are outstanding items it may longer. All loads will also be subject to visual inspection by staff on site at the receiving facilities for compliance.
